Full Circle: A New Chapter for Selfless Hands Foundation

An open letter from our Founder & Executive Director

When I founded Selfless Hands Foundation in 2018, I was operating on pure adrenaline, passion, and what I genuinely believed was God's purpose for my life. I knew I was called to serve, even if I didn't fully understand what that calling would require of me.

I didn't have all the answers. I didn't have everything figured out. But I had a heart for people, a willingness to show up, and a belief that God would make room for the work He had placed on my heart.

I still remember being referred to a stranger to design our very first logo. To this day, I couldn't tell you her name, but I remember the moment I saw the logo she created for Selfless Hands Foundation. I fell in love with it at first sight.

Over the years, I've contemplated changing our logo, updating our image, and giving the organization an entirely new look. But no matter what I explored, nothing quite captured the heart of SHF like that original design.

Old faithful.

And as I've come to realize, sometimes growth doesn't require you to abandon where you started. Sometimes it requires you to return to it with a greater understanding of why you began.

Life Has a Way of Bringing You Full Circle

A lot of life has happened since 2018.

I've grown personally, professionally, and spiritually. I've advanced in my career with the federal government, completed my master's degree and professional certifications, married the love of my life, and welcomed a beautiful baby boy into this world. I've experienced seasons of incredible joy, difficult lessons, unexpected challenges, and moments that forced me to grow in ways I never anticipated. And through it all, Selfless Hands Foundation has remained part of my life.

But something shifted after I became a mother.

While lying in my hospital bed after delivering my son, I found myself reflecting on my life, my purpose, and the legacy I wanted to leave behind. Motherhood gave me a renewed sense of responsibility, not just to my family, but to the calling I believe God entrusted to me. I knew I didn't want to simply keep doing things because that's what I had always done.

I wanted to be intentional. I made a decision that moving forward, everything I do must be "with purpose and on purpose." (Shout-out to Billy for that one!) That conviction extended to my family, my career, my personal growth, and, of course, Selfless Hands Foundation. And somehow, after all these years, all these accomplishments, and all these life experiences, I found myself right back where I started.

With a pen, a notepad, and a vision.

Returning to the Why

I began asking myself some of the same questions I asked nearly nine years ago.

Why does Selfless Hands Foundation exist? What has God called us to do for our community? Who are we truly here to serve? And what does meaningful, lasting impact actually look like?

Those questions challenged me to look beyond the number of events we've hosted, the amount of assistance we've provided, or how busy we've managed to keep ourselves. Because while those things matter, I began thinking more deeply about what happens after we help someone through a crisis.

What happens after the rent is paid? After the lights are restored? After the groceries are distributed? After the immediate emergency has passed? Are we simply helping families survive another difficult moment, or are we creating opportunities for them to experience lasting stability?

That distinction has become increasingly important to me.

Our mission remains simple: To empower communities in times of crisis. But our vision challenges us to think beyond immediate relief:

A future where crisis does not permanently define or destabilize underserved minority families, and every family has an equitable opportunity to recover, rebuild, and thrive.

That's the future we're working toward.

Grounded in What Matters Most

As we enter this next chapter, we're grounding ourselves in four core values that will guide how we serve, lead, and grow.

  • Compassion: We respond to people's needs with care.

  • Safety: We protect the dignity, privacy, and well-being of those we serve.

  • Empathy: We listen to understand each family's situation without judgment.

  • Integrity: We are honest, responsible, and follow through on our commitments.

These values aren't just words for a website. They are commitments to the people who trust us during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. They are also commitments to our volunteers, community partners, donors, and everyone who has invested in this mission.

A New Website. A Renewed Commitment.

So, why redesign the entire website?

Because I wanted our digital presence to reflect the clarity and intentionality we're bringing into this next chapter. I wanted something simpler. Something that made it easier for families to understand our services, for volunteers to find meaningful opportunities, and for community partners to see how we can work together. I wanted our website to tell our story without losing sight of the people we're called to serve.

But more importantly, this redesign represents a renewed commitment to the work itself.

We're moving forward with a stronger focus on homelessness prevention, crisis intervention, housing stability, food security, and community-based support that promotes long-term self-sufficiency.

We want to strengthen our programs, deepen our partnerships, improve how we serve families, and be more intentional about measuring the impact of our work. Providing immediate relief is important, but helping families build a more stable future is equally important.

We're not abandoning what brought us here. We're building upon it. And yes, after all that contemplating, the original logo is staying.

Some things are simply worth holding on to.

Nearly Nine Years Later...

As Selfless Hands Foundation approaches its ninth year, I'm grateful for everyone who’s been part of this journey.

To every volunteer who has shown up, every donor who has given, every organization that has partnered with us, and every family who has trusted us during difficult times: thank you. Thank you for believing in a vision that began with a young woman who had more passion than resources and more faith than answers.

I still don't have all the answers. But I have more experience, more perspective, a deeper understanding of responsibility, and an even greater commitment to doing this work well.

What started with a calling has grown into something much bigger than me. As we enter this next chapter, my prayer is that we never become so focused on growing as an organization that we forget why we exist.

To serve people. To meet needs. To empower communities in times of crisis.

Nearly nine years in, and in many ways, I feel like we're just getting started. I look forward to doing this next chapter of life with you all. ❤️

With love and purpose,
